Born April 3rd 1961 in France.
Diploma of École des Beaux Arts in 1985

Bénédicte Blanc-Fontenille is a french artist living and working in Miami. She draws her inspiration from a reflexion on the fragility of the human being and his cultures : « Fragility appears to me as an energy, an engine which propels the human being and generates the movement, as life is nothing but movement.

There is the buried element and the visible one, the demolition that calls the reconstruction, the fold that needs to be unfolded to access the knowledge, to acquire achievement.There is nothing definitive, or permanent, rather the pursuit for renewal, revival, revision.

This movement represent a succession of moments. As G. Bachelard was writing:

«Time has only one reality, that one of the moment ».

Following that trend, each of her pieces could be called «passage» or «snapshot» with all the vulnerability contained in those words. In her work, lines, colors, rocks, architecture or silhouettes of humans become the witnesses of the fugacity of each present moment in wich lurks the projection of the future.

BÉNÉDICTE BLANC-FONTENILLE IN HER OWN WORDS :
« My work comes from my thoughts on man’s fragility  and on human activity, whereby it appears to me that this fragility, forms an impressive energy source propelling man unceasingly and engendering movement, which is life.
Hence, as witness to the fleeting nature of every moment man lives out  his freedom through these actual present moments.
My human figures, constructed as silhouettes, the better to stress the fragility of movement, represent momentary snapshots ready to develop in the eye of the beholder.
My ‘Floating Horizontals’ moving on the horizontal plane of water highlight. The fragility of this precarious balance, just as did orange peel on a table’s edge in many C17th ‘Vanitas’ paintings. Water’s presence stands therefore for much more than a banal support.
By inviting the viewer to contemplate their gentle dance, they encourage one to consider the importance of water. I spent much of my youth in Brittany, where the proximity to water, irrespective of the season, was essential and precious to me. This ‘water happiness’ has never left me and has necessarily and always been present in my work to express fragility.
My first ever creations relative to water were made in Paris. Usually a baroque form named ‘Messenger’ floated upon water contained in a receptacle, itself integrated within an architectural shape.
Then my search took me to Miami, where I live on an island today and my work is as ever with water. Water surrounds me! Nowadays no longer a question of placing it in a container, but rather to utilise water’s expanses and place upon its surface my latest work, the ‘Floating Horizontals’ that are so in tune with human fragility.
I then had the idea to make installations in swimming pools, which are legion in Florida, mainly under-utilised. This offers an easier means of sharing my oeuvre with a larger public and pursuing related photographic work.«

À PROPOS DE BÉNÉDICTE BLANC-FONTENILLE :
« Mon travail est une réflexion sur la fragilité de l’être et des choses humaines. Il me semble que cette fragilité, telle une formidable énergie, propulse l’humain dans un moment sans cesse renouvelé, engendrant ainsi le mouvement qui est la vie.
Ainsi, témoins de la fugacité de chaque instant, l’homme puise la liberté d’élévation dans l’instant présent.
Mes personnages, travaillent  comme des silhouettes afin de mieux souligner la fragilité du mouvement, sont des instantanés qui ne demandent qu’à se développer dans l’oeil du spectateur.
Les Horizontales Flottantes se mouvant sur l’horizontalité de l’eau mettent en avant la précarité de cet équilibre, à l’image de la pelure d’orange sur le bord d’une table dans les vanités du XVIIème siècle. L’eau ainsi présente est plus qu’un simple support.
En entrainant le spectateur dans une contemplation de leur danse lente, elles l invitent aussi a une méditation sur l’importance de l’eau.
J’ai passe une grande partie de mon enfance en Bretagne, ou la présence de la mer quelque soit la saison, m’était essentielle et précieuse. Ce  « bonheur de l’eau » ne m’a jamais quittée et ne pouvait évidement qu’être présent dans mon travail de réflexion sur la fragilité.
Mes premiers travaux avec l’eau ont été réalisés à Paris. En général une forme baroque appelée « Messager » reposait sur de l’eau contenue dans une vasque, elle même intégrée a une forme architecturale.
Puis mes pas m’ont conduit a Miami, ou j’habite maintenant sur une ile. Là encore, l’eau est au rendez-vous. Elle m’entoure. Il n’est alors plus question de la mettre dans un contenant, mais de profiter pleinement de son étendue en posant à sa surface un travail particulier toujours en résonance avec la fragilité de l’être humain : les Horizontales Flottantes.
Ensuite m’est venue l’idée de créer des installations dans des piscines qui sont pléthores en Floride et trop souvent inutilisées. C’est une façon plus facile de faire partager le travail avec un plus grand public ainsi que de développer un travail de photos. »
