Jonathan BAEZ

THE MORPHINE SERIES

“Life was going on as usual with no real disruption. Suddenly in the summer or 2019 I became gravely ill… Doctors hadn’t the slightest clue of what I had or how to approach it.While hospitalized for approximately a month and a half and through heavy morphine sedation I began working on a series of pieces which would up to some point save me going Crazy…  This would later become THE MORPHINE SERIES.  A visual Diary of my days of heavy medication and nights in ephemeral parallel universes.

The art work is the exploration and discovery of myself at a time when uncertainty was the order of the day. Without giving up the present world and circumstances, I invented a whole new realm where fantasy and hope and morphine dreams were just a brushstroke away.”

Artist statement I try not getting in the way of my work. To allow something else to appear, to show me the way… I recognize the presence of something else that works through me at the time of the creation. This can only happen when I surrender the illusion of control and become receptive.

Bio Jonathan Baez (born July 20 1976 in the Dominican Republic) living in South Florida. Jonathan Baez moved from the Dominican Republic where he lived with his grandmother  (a ceramic artist) to Miami Florida in 1989. Jonathan began to take an interest in the arts first as a musician playing in local punk bands, his need to express later evolved into plastic arts. Jonathan felt that there were more ways to express than with just words, which can have different meanings and be misleading. He also felt that in life there was something else out there which he could not see but was certain of its presence. At the age of thirty-two Jonathan began the studies of the teachings of George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (The fourth way) Jonathan’s work is his way of making sense of those things which can not be intellectualized, only be felt. His work is abstract by nature with a touch of visual story letting which gives the viewer the ability and sensation to participate in the visual experience by leaving open suggestions which form and finish images.

Biographie

Tertium quid refers to an unidentified third element that is in combination with two known ones. The phrase is associated with alchemy. It is Latin for « third thing ». This could also be seen in art as the silent conversation between art and viewer.
Tertium quid is by definition unknown… We will never be able to pin point in absolute this element, but in the search, we will discover many things, which have always been there, but we have been asleep and blind to them.

Artist statement
I try not getting in the way of my work. To allow something else to appear,
to show me the way… I recognize the presence of something else that works through me at the time of the creation. This can only happen when I surrender the illusion of control and become receptive.
