Artistic Statement 

« I  have been working with abstract techniques for the past 10 years but I am essentially drawing inspiration from the same landscapes that I began painting 35 years ago. Initially I represented the Sequoias and mountains and rivers of California, the high plains deserts of Arizona and The Grand Canyon quite literally- as an observer. But exploring new techniques allowed me to make the transition from a conscious approach to painting to a more emotional and involved expression of what it felt like to be part of that environment.
In this latest series I may still use a literally rendered image of a wild animal or a bird but I try to use it as an abstract element, balancing within the composition not only the image but the weight of the sentiment that it bears.
I like the dynamics of contrast. I usually begin with a very loose, very broad composition that gives the piece a foundation of movement and energy. That is why my paintings are generally large. Most of them have developed over years with many layers that, at some point, have been worked with an abrasive disc that removes areas and reveals random patterns that I then try to isolate. And somewhere in this process, between the paint and the sanding and whatever impulses I bring to the canvas a theme will emerge. It is rare that I begin a painting with a vision that makes it all the way to the final piece. Always something unexpected surfaces. I try to create as many moments as I can on the surface of each painting and then respond to them. In this way each piece is simultaneously a discovery and a personal expression ».

« Je travaille depuis dix ans avec des techniques abstraites, mais, essentiellement, je puise mon inspiration des mêmes paysages que j’ai commencé à peindre il y a 35 ans. Tout au début je représentais les Sequoias, les montagnes et fleuves de la Californie, les déserts  des High plains de l’Arizona et le Grand Canyon  littéralement en tant qu’observateur. Mais l’exploration de nouvelles techniques m’a permis de faire la transition d’une approche consciente à la peinture vers une expression plus émotionnelle et impliquée: l’expression de ma participation dans cet environnement.
Dans ma dernière série, quoi que j’utilise une image littérale d’un fauve ou d’un oiseau, j’essaie de m’en servir comme élément abstrait mettant en contre partie l’image avec le poids du sentiment qu’elle porte. J’aime la dynamique des contrastes. Je commence habituellement avec une composition épurée et large qui donnera un fondement de mouvement et d’énergie. C’est pourquoi mes tableaux sont généralement de grand format. La plupart ont évolué à travers les années avec plusieurs couches de peinture et, à un moment ou autre, ont été retravaillés avec une disqueuse qui enlève des parties et révèle des formes aléatoires que j’essaie d’isoler. Quelque part dans ce procédé entre la peinture et l’abrasion et n’importe quelles impulsions que  j’y apporte, il y aura un thème qui ressort. C’est rare que je commence un tableau avec une vision qui reste jusqu’à la fin. C’est toujours l’inattendu qui monte à la surface. J’essaie de créer autant de moments possible sur la surface de chaque peinture et ensuite leur répondre. Chaque pièce est ainsi une découverte et à la même fois une expression personnelle ».

The Bargemon Festival is an annual gathering of 30 international artists that was presented for the first time by Stephen Paul in the summer of 2017. Stephen, the director of Madarts Studios and The Giacobetti-Paul Gallery in New York, moved to the South of France in 2010 and was inspired to create a festival in Bargemon after the unlikely discovery of two of the region’s best venues for contemporary art in this idyllic little mountain village about 30 kilometres from the Mediterranean. Beddington Fine Art, tucked away in the ramparts of the village had been presenting an international group of artists for twenty years and Blue Dog Litho, at the other end of town, for ten.
The goal of the festival was to attract artists and their ideas from around the world to work alongside the artists already living in the region and to present that work and those ideas in a 4 day long outdoor exhibition. Stephen had invited 15 artists from Madarts Studios in New York with the promise that if they paid their way over here he would find them a place to stay. And in late July of 2017, with the help of the visiting artists, the mayor’s office, the galleries and the generosity of the Bargemonais citizens who hosted them, 15 artists came and worked for two weeks before exhibiting alongside 10 artists from the region and many others from Beddington Fine Art and Blue Dog Litho in the first New York Festival of Contemporary Art in Bargemon.

The objectives of building and installing the exhibition walls outside in front of the Musée Camos and establishing the dynamic of having visiting artists being hosted by the village and working in studios around the village before presenting their work alongside European artists were achieved in the summer of 2017, but for the festival to grow, new goals would have to be reached in 2018. To that end an association was formed to help define and work towards those goals. In addition to bringing an even larger group of established and emerging artists together in 2018 the association mounted an extensive advertising campaign and expanded the program to include children’s art projects and a series of music and dance performances. Among the variety of performing artists, Jim McCarty, a founding member of The Yardbirds performed with his new group Rennaissance and Satoshi Haga and his partner Rie, visiting choreographers from New York presented an evening of dance.

In 2019 the goal is to keep the current format while continuing to expand the audience. Many of the internationally renowned artists from Beddington Fine Art will attend this year as will an exciting group of emerging and established artists from around the world. The line up of entertainers has yet to be finalised but already includes many  brilliant artists and the promise of many unforgettable moments. The association has been hard at work since October. To promote Le Festival de Bargemon which will take place  from the  25th to the  28 Juillet 2019.  Beddington Fine Art presents en collaboration with  Stephen Paul Le Festival de Bargemon Show which opens  Saturday  9 march  rom 5pm to 10pm .The exhibition will continue till the 12 April  2019 and will be open from Wednesday to Sunday from 1à to 1pm and 4 to 7pm and by appointment.

Le Festival de Bargemon est une réunion de trente artistes internationaux qui a été présentée par Stephen Paul pour la première fois en Juillet 2017. Stephen, directeur de Madarts Studios et de la Galerie Giacobetti Paul à New York, a quitté les USA pour le Sud de la France en 2010 et s’est inspiré pour créer un festival à Bargemon suite à la découverte improbable de deux des meilleurs galeries d’art contemporain de la région dans ce petit village niché dans les collines du Haut Var : Beddington Fine Art, installée sur les Remparts du vieux village présente un groupe d’artistes internationaux depuis presque vingt ans et de l’autre côté du village Blue Dog Litho a ouvert ses portes il y a dix ans.
Le concept du Festival était d’attirer des artistes du monde entier et de partager leurs idées en leur proposant de travailler aux côtés d’artistes déjà résidant dans la région en présenter leurs créations pendant quatre jours d’exposition en plein air. Stephen avait ainsi invité 15 artistes de MadArts Studios, New York avec la promesse qu’à condition qu’ils achètent leur billet aller-retour, il arrangerait leur hébergement. Fin Juillet 2017, avec l’aide des artistes venus des Etats Unis, de la Mairie de Bargemon, des galeries et le soutien des Bargemonais qui les accueillaient chez eux, sont venus 15 artistes qui ont travaillé pendant deux semaines avant de d’exposer aux côtés de dix artistes de la région et des artistes de Beddington Fine Art et de Blue Dog Litho dans le premier New York Festival d’Art Contemporain de Bargemon.

Le but de construire et d’installer les cimaises du Festival devant le Musée Camos, Place St Etienne et d’établir la dynamique de l’hébergement des artistes en visite travaillant dans des ateliers dans et autour du village avant de présenter leurs œuvres à côté de celles des artistes Européens a réussi en 2017, mais pour que le Festival grandisse, il faudrait de nouveaux buts pour 2018. A cette fin, une Association a été formée pour définir et avancer vers ces buts. En plus d’amener un plus grand groupe d’artistes émergeants et établis en 2018 l’Association a monté une campagne de publicité extensive et a élargi le programme pour inclure des projets d’art pour les enfants et une série de performances de musique et de danse.

Parmi les participants, Jim McCarty, un des fondateurs du groupe mythique Les Yardbirds était sur scène avec son nouveau groupe , Renaissance, et Satoshi Haga et son partenaire, Rie, tous deux en visite de New York, ont présenté une après-midi et soirée de danse contemporaine.

En 2019, l’intention est de conserver le format existant en augmentant la présence des visiteurs avec une campagne publicitaire encore plus extensive. Plusieurs des artistes connus à l’international de Beddington Fine Art seront présents ainsi qu’un groupe d’artistes émergeants et établis d’à travers le monde. La liste des participants n’a pas encore été concrétisée mais elle comprend déjà beaucoup d’artistes excellents et la promesse de plein de moments inoubliables.
En attendant le Festaval de cet été qui a lieu du  25 au 28 Juillet 2019.  Beddington Fine Art présente en collaboration avec Stephen Paul le Festival de Bargemon Show qui ouvre ses portes le samedi 9 mars de 17h à 22h. L’Exposition continuera jusqu’au 12 Avril 2019  du mercredi au dimanche de 10h à 13h et de 16h à 18h et sur RDV.
