The comparison with CoBrA in the work of Wouter Stips is soon made. He works with the same spirit and energy of the Cobra-artists like Corneille, Karel Appel, Lucebert, Constant, Eugene Brands, Pederson a.o. His works are being collected by Cobra-collectors worldwide. His colorful bright and childlike style is very much his own. One of the key features of the CoBrA movement was, of course, its multidisciplinary aspect. You could write, compose poetry, draw, paint, produce sculptures; you could even sing. And that is something that you see in the work of Stips.
He seizes every opportunity to manifest his ideas in a material that appeals to him, that arouses his creativity. A thought suddenly arises, ‘Aha, I can make an image out of that’ and then he begins, like a man possessed, to make a series of images, figures or books. And then he continues making pictures lithographs, prints, silk-screen prints, music. This is something intrinsic to Stips to CoBrA, and actually to the open-mindedness of a child as well. It its simple lack of inhibition. You do what you enjoy, and what you don’t enjoy, you avoid. This is the way he thinks, and lives. When, at a certain moment, he was a successful television and film director, he simply quit that world in order to take up painting again, writing and sculpting full-time. Without hesitating back to his roots; that is something admirable.

Une comparaison se présente souvent entre l’œuvre de Wouter Stips et celle de CoBrA. Il partage l’esprit et l’énergie des artistes Cobra, tels Corneille, Appel, Lucebert, Constant, Eugene Brands, Pederson et al .  Ses oeuvres sont acquises par des ‘collectionneurs Cobra’ à travers le monde. Son style avec ses couleurs vives et ses rêves d’enfant est entièrement le sien. Un des aspects spécifiques du mouvement Cobra était sa multi-discipline : on écrivait, composait de la poésie, dessinait, peignait et on sculptait. On pouvait même chanter. Cela se voit dans l’œuvre de Stips. Il saisit chaque occasion pour manifester ses idées sur un matériau qui lui plaît et qui excite sa créativité.

et il attaque comme un homme possédé et crée une série d’images, de personnages ou de livres. Ensuite il continue avec des lithographies, des sérigraphies et avec la musique.
Ceci est intrinsèque chez Stips, chez Cobra et dans l’ouverture d’esprit chez les enfants. C’est un simple manque d’inhibition. Vous faites ce qui vous plaît et ce que vous n’aimez pas, vous l’évitez.
C’est comme ça qu’il pense, qu’il vit.
Quand, à un certain moment il était cinéaste réputé et directeur à la télévision, il s’est retourné le dos pour redevenir artiste peintre, écrivain et sculpteur à plein temps.
Un retour, sans hésitation, à ses racines, ce qui est admirable.

Wouter Stips lives and works in Holland – in the  Amsterdam area and in Spain – Valencia. He studied graphic design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and went on to work in various visual media and forms of applied art. He has contributed to films and television programs, designed records covers and stage sets, give  lectures and published various books and  theatre plays. In 1998 he returned to his roots and first love : painting. “I paint the dreams I’d like to dream; landscapes and scenes where man and beast meet and play, with no restrictions whatsoever. Anything should be possible in my paintings; as in the mind of a child.” He is also actively contributing to the development of children’s rights, health and education through exhibitions, projects and donations.

The paintings and sculptures of WOUTER STIPS do represent a world full of love, poetry, freedom and happiness.
His glass-sculptures are being produced at the Berengo Studio’s on Murano by the famous glass-master Danillo. The works always radiate craftsmanship, humor, love and life experience.

Stips’ works are being exhibited worldwide in Museums and reputable galleries.

Wouter Stips vit et travaille aux Pays Bas –  dans la région d’Amsterdam et en Espagne – Valencia. Il étudie le graphic design à l’Académie de Beaux Arts de Rotterdam puis travaille dans les médias visuels et d’autres formes d’Art Appliqués. Il  contribué à des  films et à des  émissions de télévision, créé des pochettes de disques et décors de théâtre, donne des lconférences et a écrit de nombreux livres et pièces de théâtre. En 1998 il revient  vers  ses racines et son grand amour : la peinture. “Je peins les rêves que j’aime rêver, paysages et scènes où l’homme et l’animal aiment se réunir et jouer, sans la moindre restriction. Tout devrait être possible dans mes tableaux, comme dans l’esprit d’un enfant.” Il contribue activement au développement des droits de l’enfant, leur santé et éducation par le biais d’expositions, de  projets et de donations.

Les tableaux et sculptures de WOUTER STIPS représentent un monde plein d’amour, de  poésie, de liberté et de  bonheur.

Ses sculptures en verre sont créées au Studio Berengo à Murano par le verrier réputé Danillo. Ces oeuvres rayonnent avec la dexterité artisanale, l’humour, l’amour et l’expérience de la vie.

Les oeuvres de Stips sont exposées à travers le monde dans des musées et dans des galeries d’envergure.

Galerie Beddington in Bargemon, France toont van 18 juni tot eind augustus 2016 nieuw werk van beeldend kunstenaar Wouter Stips.

In de vrolijke wereld van Wouter Stips vol liefde, poëzie, vrijheid en geluk, ontdek je – op het tweede gezicht – een diepere laag met betekenisvolle momenten uit het leven. Stips schildert speels en filosofisch in een persoonlijke beeldtaal universele waarden met thema’s als dood, afscheid, geboorte, het mysterie van het bestaan.

Stips’ verhalen op doek ontlokken een glimlach, ontroeren en voeren je mee naar het magische tijdperk van de vervlogen jeugd. In een intensief creatief proces laat hij spontaan en associatief kleuren, vormen en lijnen opkomen zodat hij er zelf door verrast wordt. Onbevangen en vrij, zonder een vooraf bedacht plan, stelt hij zich open voor energie die hij overbrengt op het doek. Tijdens het schilderen ontstaan, net zo vrij en verrassend, teksten bij de beelden, soms enkele krachtige directe woorden, soms een kort gedicht. De vele kunstpoëzie boeken die hij in korte tijd publiceerde zijn nu al collector items.

Door te experimenteren en risico’s te nemen blijft  Wouter Stips zich vernieuwen. Ook in zijn glassculpturen, die in het Italiaanse Murano bij Venetië ( beroemd om ambachtelijk geblazen en gevormd glas ) tot leven komen laten een duidelijke ontwikkeling zien. De vrolijke kleurrijke beelden tonen soms een versobering in vorm en kleur.

In de recente schilderijen ziet men een vereenvoudiging van de figuratie en een accent op de gelaagdheid van een schilderij. In vele lagen over elkaar brengt de kunstenaar verf aan, waardoor de verfhuid fascinerende structuren laat zien. Uit deze dynamische gelaagde achtergrond ontstaan geleidelijk vormen. Na vele experimenten, laag over laag, vindt hij de juiste spanning, de balans tussen kleuren en vormen. Zo ontstaan evenwichtige composities.

Na zijn opleiding aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam exposeerde Wouter Stips (1944) grafiek en schilderijen, maakte hij animatiefilms in Praag, poppen in Parijs, speelde, schreef en regisseerde theatervoorstellingen en publiceerde verschillende boeken en theaterstukken. Vanaf 1980 legde hij zich toe op het schrijven, regisseren en ontwikkelen van televisieprogramma’s. Na vijftien intensieve televisiejaren besloot hij in 1995 terug te keren bij zijn oude liefde, het vrij schilderen. Als kunstenaar neemt hij deel aan projecten van o.a. Terre des Hommes, Memisa/ Cordaid, het Lilianefonds en de Stichting Kansarme Kinderen. Zijn schilderijen en sculpturen vinden wereldwijd hun weg naar galeries, musea en collectionneurs.
